A Conversation With Calvin Johnson

Although it is the capital of Washington state, Olympia is unassuming, some may say, modest little town, located 60 miles southwest of Seattle. Its history is dotted with indigenous people’s succumbing to speculative land-grabbers, and the usual ups and downs of progress. Olympia stands apart from other comparable towns with an illustrious lean towards all things cultural. In the Wikipedia page on Olympia, Under Notable People, you’ll find a list that includes, Kurt Cobain, Carrie Brownstein, Matt Groening, Macklemore and:

Calvin Johnson, of the band, Beat Happening and founder of Olympia-based record label K Records, lives in Olympia.

K Records, founded in 1982 is now recognized as a major player at the beginning of the modern independent music movement. Johnson with his eclectic taste and droll wit is often cited as a significant influence on the late Kurt Cobain. The Calvin Johnson and K Records stories are better told by the man himself, so Norman B asked for an in-depth conversation. Next on Life Elsewhere, Calvin selects choice cuts from the K Records catalog and shares all those inside details you wanted to know about.
