Women In Politics & A New Beguiling Voice

While yet another major celebrity is accused of sexual misconduct, the President’s alleged scandalous peccadilloes although continually in the news have so far not impeded his standing. This leads to the question why politicians (of all parties) enable such a misogynistic climate. Our conversation with Lucia Graves from last year provides some answers to an unsettling question.

As Donald Trump loomed behind her in the 2nd Presidential debate, Hillary Clinton says her “skin crawled”. In her new book, What Happened, she reveals her most detailed comments about what happened during one of the campaign’s more memorable moments. Clinton calls this an attempt to “pull back the curtain” on her losing bid for the presidency. “This is not okay, I thought,” Recalls Clinton in her book. “It was the second presidential debate and Donald Trump was looming behind me. Two days before, the world heard him brag about groping women. Now we were on a small stage and no matter where I walked, he followed me closely, staring at me, making faces. It was incredibly uncomfortable. He was literally breathing down my neck. My skin crawled. It was one of those moments where you wish you could hit pause and ask everyone watching, ‘Well, what would you do?’ Do you stay calm, keep smiling and carry on as if he weren’t repeatedly invading your space? Or do you turn, look him in the eye and say loudly and clearly, ‘Back up, you creep. Get away from me. I know you love to intimidate women, but you can’t intimidate me, so back up.” The peculiar and disturbing performance by Trump was ridiculed on Saturday Night Live, where the soundtrack to Jaws was used to empathize Trump’s predatory stalking of the first woman to run for the office of President in the United States. The publication of Clinton’s book drew attention again on Trump’s deplorable behavior, in turn, this led us to ask Lucia Graves back to Life Elsewhere to explore the state of Women In Politics. Lucia, an accomplished writer for The Guardian last spoke with us about her must-read article on The Most Dangerous Company Most People Have Never Heard Of.

On first listen, you’ll know you have to hear it again. How Much Is Enough? is one of those rare songs that immediately captures your attention. Is it the plaintive, almost fragile voice? Yes, but you quickly realize the singer’s voice has depth and power as she clearly annunciates the song’s title. Could it be the delicate guitar coda? Yes, but the bridge with the unexpected jazz-like bass also prompts another listen. And, as you listen yet again, an inevitable round of trainspotting will result in the reverent acknowledgment of a long-established and acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter. A name, Montreal-based, Dana Gavanski easily mentions in her interview for Life Elsewhere. This is her first time chatting for a broadcast as she innocently asks, “What do you want to know?” of the first question. Dana’s unassuming honesty in the conversation is beguiling almost at odds with the complexity and maturity of her music. Her new beautiful single, How Much Is Enough?, taken from her debut EP, Spring Demos, available on Fox Food Records.

Anya Yurchyshyn grew up in a narrow townhouse in Boston, every corner filled with the souvenirs of her parents’adventurous international travels. On their trips to Egypt, Italy, and Saudi Arabia, her mother, Anita, and her father, George, lived an entirely separate life from the one they led as the parents of Anya and her sister – one that Anya never saw. The parents she knew were a brittle, manipulative alcoholic and a short-tempered disciplinarian: people she imagined had never been in love.When she was sixteen, Anya’s father was killed in a car accident in Ukraine. At thirty-two, she became an orphan when her mother drank herself to death. As she was cleaning out her childhood home, she suddenly discovered a trove of old letters, photographs, and journals hidden in the debris of her mother’s life. These lost documents told a very different story than the one she’d believed to be true – of a forbidden romance; of a loving marriage, and the loss of a child. With these revelations in hand, Anya undertook an investigation, interviewing relatives and family friends, traveling to Wales and Ukraine, and delving deeply into her own difficult history in search of the truth, even uncovering the real circumstances of her father’s death – not an accident, perhaps, but something more sinister. James Smith of the always forward-thinking Fox Food Records sent us a pre-release of the new album from CADE. “I was immediately entranced,” says Norman B, “Every so often new music comes my way that makes my heart beat differently, CADE did just that!” CADE is the recording project of Toronto based Kaiya Cade who creates ethereal and haunting dream-folk, combining acoustic instruments and synthetic sounds with her bewitching and spellbinding vocals.The musical awareness and critical ear Kaiya has developed has evolved into a passion for film composition. Creating ethereal and haunting sonic landscapes, Kaiya combines synthetic sound with the acoustic instrumentation of piano, guitar, strings, sound bowls, and percussion, and finishes the musical environment with her characteristic vocal overlaying.

A Man Reluctant To Share Of Himself

“Is that your real name?” Asks Norman B of Logan Farmer. “Or did you make it up”? It’s a fair question because Logan Farmer doesn’t use his real name to record and perform. And, his real name does have a conveniently fictitious air to it. Currently, he works under the moniker of Monarch MTN. Although, he may consider going with his given name if he chooses to present a stripped down, more acoustic version of his singer-songwriting talent. Logan’s reason for selecting Monarch MTN is surprising much like his music – not what you were initially expecting. Logan Farmer cautiously explains when he joins Norman B for the next edition of Life Elsewhere. He talks about his latest album, I Woke At The Station, his ideas about music and more. It’s an honest conversation with a man who is often reluctant to share too much of himself. He suggests that his music can do all the explaining, knowing all the while that he interweaves often dark imagery with perhaps a cynical hint of drollness. Norman B’s gentle, comfortable probing results in Logan revealing perhaps a little more than he intends and he agrees that the landscape he covers with his music has been predominately the domain of female artists in the last few years. Think of Siv Jakobsen, Dana Gavanski, Sorcha Richardson and Nancy Kells. “The last male singer-songwriter to catch my attention to this degree was the brilliant Canadian, Barzin.” Norman B announces. High praise indeed. Along with the conversation, you will hear cuts from I Woke At The Station.

He has written many articles on the life and legacy of Charles Dickens, his latest book, What The Dickens?! Distinctly Dickensian Words And How To Use Them is a literary romp through the twisty alleyways of Victorian vernacular. Bryan skillfully follows the etymological trails of 200 words penned by Dickens.
