Ms Travilla-Bown had responded to a request during the last fund-drive at WMNF, (the station where Life Elsewhere is produced), for listeners to to make a generous contribution and in return they would be able to co-produce an edition of the program. Kerry also kindly selected River Man for the Hit That Never Was, by the talented and influential but sadly long-departed Nick Drake. Dr. Bass explains that Drake is believed to have been keen on echoing the evocative music of Delius and Ravel. Listen! Chorale Music (& Nick Drake)

Next on Life Elsewhere, we explore chorale music (or is it choral?) with GRAMMY-nominated singer and conductor Dr. James Bass. The director of choral studies at the School of Music at the University of South Florida and the artistic director of The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay joins the program at the request of Kerry Travilla-Bown who will be guest producer. Kerry, an enthusiastic devotee of Life Elsewhere, made a generous donation to WMNF, the listener-supported radio station, where Life Elsewhere is produced. During the station’s last fund-raising event, listeners were asked to make an appreciable contribution, in return they would be able to co-produce an edition of the program. Kerry  came up with the funds and a brilliant programming idea, “I’m a member of The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay Kerry announced, “How about introducing the listeners to chorale music?”

Nick DrakeAs she is guest programmer, we asked Kerry Travilla-Bown to come up with this week’s Hit That Never Was. A Listener Programs Life Elsewhere

Dr James Bass

Life Elsewhere is produced at the exceptional facilities of WMNF 88.5fm in Tampa. WMNF is uniquely distinguished by remaining a truly independent listener-supported radio station. During the last fund-drive for the station, we asked listeners of Life Elsewhere to make a generous contribution and in return they would be able to co-produce an edition of the program. Kerry Travilla-Bown, an enthusiastic devotee of Life Elsewhere responded immediately, pledging financial support for the show and WMNF. Plus, she presented a brilliant programming idea, “I’m a member of The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay said Kerry, “How about introducing the listeners to chorale music?” We were intrigued. We met, we talked, we were fascinated. A program based on Kerry’s suggestion was planned. Ms. Travilla-Bown will co-produce the next edition of Life Elsewhere and introduce Dr. James Bass, GRAMMY-nominated singer and conductor. Dr. Bass is the director of choral studies at the School of Music at the University of South Florida and the artistic director of The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. We will explore and discuss chorale music and play selections of this beautiful music.

This week’s Hit That Never Was features the talented and influential but sadly long-departed Nick Drake and his poignant, River Man. Selected by our guest programmer Kerry Travilla-Bown, who says there is an interesting connection to the theme of the show and Nick Drake‘s song: the orchestration to River Man is supposed to echo Delius and Ravel, also The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay and The Florida Orchestra released: Delius: Appalachia; Sea Drift in 2012.
