The Life Elsewhere Predictions Show

A Caricature For President was the title of our 16th of August, 2015 edition of Life Elsewhere. We were being smart-alecks, ironic perhaps. Our intent was to focus in on how crazy things had become in the world of politics and in turn, how talented caricaturists and political commentators like Steve Brodner were having a field day. Looking back now, we had no idea then just how loony-tunes our world as we knew it would become. Two and half years on and we face a new year. Perhaps we should add, with trepidation? Does the past determine the future? If that premise is correct, we are certainly in for a strange and unprecedented year ahead. How strange? How unprecedented? Even the most reliable crystal-ball wizard may have a hard time getting this one right. So, we have assembled a panel of our favorite contributors to Life Elsewhere from the past twelve months to offer their crack predictions. Environmental journalist, Robert Hunziker eagerly jumped at the task, with the caveat that he has one prediction he cannot reveal immediately, but will in good time. We pressured him on your behalf, but he only teased that we will soon learn what he means. Meanwhile, author and book critic, David Ulin has an alternate view on predictions which he articulates with gusto. Lucia Graves, the astute journalist with The Guardian, has intriguing ideas, including which movie will win an Oscar. While film and media critic Bob Ross has a disparaging view on award shows but offers up his predictions with a generous nod and a wink to his area of expertise. Washington Post, art and architecture critic, Philip Kennicott cannily takes us to alternate prediction domain. Articulate and engaging Rant News Deputy Managing Editor, Remy Carreiro wastes no time getting her ideas across. And, we had to call upon Steve Brodner to hear what the man who famously said about Trump, “He has a tiny mouth and it’s kind of vertical, I’m sorry Norman, it’s kind of vaginal.” As expected, Brodner does not hold back. Sexual Misconduct: The Questions & The Answers

The Silence Breakers: Times Person Of The Year. Al Franken Announces His Resignation. Matt Lauer Is Fired. Alleged Child Molester Runs For The Senate. Donald Trump Admits Assaults On Women & Becomes President. The headlines surrounding sexual misconduct tell only part of the story. When is misconduct a crime? Why are some of the accused forced to resign, while others are fired? And, how come some of the more abhorrent allegations are overlooked? Worse still, how is it possible for a self-confessed sexual-abuser to sit in the Oval office? To help us make sense of a many-layered and confusing topic, two astute guests will join the next edition of Life Elsewhere. Karrin Vasby Anderson, Professor of Communication Studies at Colorado State University, will make her first appearance on the program. Dr. Anderson is Director of Graduate Studies and teaches courses in rhetoric, political communication, and gender and communication. She studies the culture of politics and the politics of culture, examining the ways in which political identity is rhetorically constructed and contested in popular media. She is the coauthor of two books: Woman President: Confronting Postfeminist Political Culture and Governing Codes: Gender, Metaphor, and Political Identity. Also, returning to the program is Remy Carreiro Deputy Managing Editor, Rantt News and author the aptly-titled article, “How Misogynistic Male Reporters Shaped The Coverage Of The 2016 Election”. Our two guests expertly answer Norman B’s questions, including, “Is there an opposite of Misogynist?”

Misogyny: The Word Of The Year?

What a year it has been, even the casual observer will acknowledge, we have never seen or lived through anything like the last twelve months. So, what should be The Word Of The Year? “Unprecedented” certainly sums up the antics of the 45th President. But, is there a better word that encapsulates 2017? We here at Life Elsewhere were in continuous debate over this when a brilliantly succinct article in Rantt came to our attention, “How Misogynistic Male Reporters Shaped The Coverage Of The 2016 Election”. Skillfully authored by Remy Carrerio, Rantt Deputy Managing Editor, her piece coincidentally appeared just as the story of Matt Lauer’s expulsion from NBC was breaking. “Lauer, you might remember, oversaw a live prime-time forum with Trump and Clinton in 2016 — somewhat of a practice round for the later televised debates. It was a moment for Lauer to prove his broadcast chops.

Instead, he revealed his own personal biases clearly steeped in misogyny. He spent approximately one-third of his allotted time with Clinton questioning her use of a private email server — meaning he then had to rush through topics of actual importance, such as foreign policy and terrorism questions.” Writes Ms. Carrerio. As, the list of powerful men facing serious consequences for sexual misconduct allegations continues to grow, yet, the most powerful one of all, so far, faces none. This prompted us to go back in time, hold our noses while revisiting the infamous Access Hollywood tape. Misogyny sadly permeates from the Oval office. There it was, our Word Of The Year, Misogyny!

Remy Carreiro joins Norman B for the next edition of Life Elsewhere to talk about her article and our Word Of The Year: Misogyny.

Also in the program, new music from Australian, Stella Donnelly with Boys Will Be Boys, from her latest album, Thrush Metal. The singer-songwriter confronts a man who raped her friend and takes to task the accompanying victim-blaming. Donnelly recalls horrifying details like the young man’s father telling him “women rape themselves.”  Alex Stewart is originally from Toronto, she’s now based in Brooklyn and goes by the name, Aces. Her new single, Stranger came about when jet-lagged one night, improving at home with a video camera, she pretended to get ready to go out with someone she used to know, but had become a stranger. To round out the show, we hear Red from Bobby Kakouris, from Scotland. Bobby also performs with Alex McComas as Elizabeth Wolf.
