If Bela Lugosi’s 1931 “Dracula” is the definitive portrayal, what then of director F. W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu” with Max Schreck? Gary Oldman had the critics raving in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 version and Klaus Kinski, under the direction of Werner Herzog in “Nosferatu the Vampyre” is also a worthy contender. Christopher Lee played the role effectively many times, while Frank Langella brought a suave seductiveness in the 1979 version. The curio angle is illustrated with Andy Warhol’s name added to the title when Paul Morrissey directed Udo Kier as the vampire and William Marshall’s Blacula took Dracula into exploitation territory. There are more, many more Dracula movies. We discuss the good, the bad and the downright bizarre with renowned film critic Bob Ross in the next edition of Life Elsewhere.
