ALT-AMERICA: THE RISE OF THE RADICAL RIGHT IN THE AGE OF TRUMP

Donald Trump’s victorious campaign for the US presidency shocked the world, the seemingly sudden national prominence of white supremacists, xenophobes, militia leaders, and mysterious “alt-right” figures mystifies many. But the American extreme right has been growing steadily in number and influence since the 1990s with the rise of patriot militias. Following 9/11, conspiracy theorists found fresh life; and in virulent reaction to the first black US president, militant racists have come out of the woodwork. Nurtured by a powerful right-wing media sector in radio, TV, and online, the far right, Tea Party movement conservatives and Republican activists found common ground. Figures such as Stephen Bannon, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Alex Jones, once rightly dismissed as cranks, now haunt the reports of mainstream journalism. Investigative reporter David Neiwert has been tracking extremists for more than two decades. In his latest book, Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump, Neiwert provides a deeply researched and authoritative report on the growth of fascism and far-right terrorism, the violence of which in the last decade has surpassed anything inspired by Islamist or other ideologies in the United States. David Neiwert joins Norman B for the next edition of Life Elsewhere to talk about his years of reportage, including the most in-depth investigation of Trump’s ties to the far right.

Women Didn’t Count At All

“When the founders wrote, ‘We the People’ they really meant ‘We the White, Wealthy Men.’ Despite much lofty rhetoric, all men were not created equal and women didn’t count at all” You are just four pages in and Elaine Weiss makes clear her superb new book The Woman’s Hour has an unabashed bias, and, deservedly so. Weiss deftly traces The Great Fight To Win The Vote with the inventive skill of a Thriller writer. Packed with detailed research and archival photographs, The Woman’s Hour release was perfectly timed to coincide with International Women’s Day 2018 and National Women’s History Month. Taking time out from her busy schedule, Elaine Weiss joined Norman B to discuss her timely new book. Her enthusiastic writing comes across in her passionate conversation as she recounts delivering the manuscript for The Woman’s Hour on the day of the last general election when all trusted signs indicated that we were about to elect the first female President.

The Underlying Theme: Relationships

Would you like to know when you are going to die? Think about that for a moment, it’s a question that’s a lot harder to answer than you may realize. Chloe Benjamin understands the complexity of the question and builds a story of remarkable ambition and depth around it in her new novel, The Immortalists. It’s1969 in New York City’s Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children—four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness—sneak out to hear their fortunes. The prophecies inform their next five decades. Golden-boy Simon escapes to the West Coast, searching for love in ’80s San Francisco; dreamy Klara becomes a Las Vegas magician, obsessed with blurring reality and fantasy; eldest son Daniel seeks security as an army doctor post-9/11; and bookish Varya throws herself into longevity research, where she tests the boundary between science and immortality. Norman B’s engaging interview with Chloe explores the smart crafting of The Immortalists, the line between destiny and choice, and her observations on relationships.

When Eli first meets Sam Westergard, he is dazzled by his new friend’s charisma, energy, and determined passion. Both graduate students in New York City, the two young men bond over their idealism, their love of poetry, and their commitment to socialism, both in theory and in practice—this last taking the form of an organized protest against Soline, a giant energy company that has speculated away the jobs and savings of thousands. As an Occupy-like group begins to coalesce around him, Eli realizes that some of his fellow intellectuals are more deeply—and dangerously—devoted to the cause than others. This is the backdrop for The Radicals, the new novel by Ryan McIlvain. Ostensibly, this is an alert, timely thriller, but McIlvain explores relationships and emotions with a deft use of dialogue and beautifully arranged prose. Norman B’s thoughtful interview with Ryan ventures in many directions but always returning to the powerful core of his book, relationships.

Amy Rigby, It’s A Pleasure

What a pleasure it is to know Amy Rigby. Some people, no, make that a lot of people in the rock ’n’ roll racket can be miserable sods. I put it down to spending far too much time living on the road. Even if you’re The Stones taking up whole floors of grand hotels with your ever-increasing entourage, it’s still a bloody hotel, no matter how good the room service is or the thread-count of the sheets. Living on the road, meandering from one gig to another ain’t no fun-filled escapade. Even fresh-faced young wannabes realize the sex ’n’ drugs and rock ’n’ roll lifestyle gets stale, if not boring after the first week. So, what a pleasure it is to know Amy Rigby. She’s a veteran of lugging her precious and trusty equipment from one venue to another. But, no matter how many stairs she has to climb before she can collapse on yet another suspiciously-soiled creaky bed. And, despite almost never finding a place to eat with passable edible food, Amy manages to always carry on with a beguiling smile and, wait for it, a bloody good attitude. You don’t often come across someone who has spent the best part of their lives in the wacky world of rock ’n’ roll with the great attitude Amy Rigby has. She is about to embark on yet another expedition in support of her new album, The Old Guys. So, what a pleasure it is to welcome Amy back to Life Elsewhere to talk about and play a selection from her new album. In the last year Amy has shared her thoughts on Love, Holiday Gifts and next we’ll learn about  The Old Guys. This is her first album in a dozen years, with twelve unmistakably Amy Rigby songs, recorded with Wreckless Eric in upstate New York.
