Michael Brown, Ferguson & Media Reactions. Beach Bullies.

Screen Shot 2014-08-23 at 2.26.54 PM

Unarmed Michael Brown was shot to death by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Immediately the media circus descended on the suburb of St. Louis and reporters, anchors and pundits began rattling off their minute-by-minute commentaries. One observer posted on Facebook, Does anyone else suspect the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri is being prolonged in part because of CNN’s unrelenting coverage?” In the next edition of Life Elsewhere, we’ll ask Eric Deggans, journalist & author of the resolutely titled, Race-Baiter, to give his overview of the media coverage and how it relates to the premise of his book, How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation“.

Plus this week’s Hit That Never Was features a very rare cover of The Velvet Underground’s Femme Fatale by the unlikely-named, The Beach Bullies from their 1980 album titled We Rule The Universe on the long-defunct Musclebound Records. The Beach Bullies were the brainchild of James A. Smith, aka The Great One (guitar/vocals), friend and sometime collaborator of Robyn Hitchcock. Along with vocalist Jill Fricker (vocals/guitar).
