Friends For Equality

“I’m very, very worried!” said talented and enterprising singer/songwriter, Nancy Kells. It was one day after the result of the Presidential election were announced. Her voice almost quavering as she added, “This feels like a bad dream. How is it possible for a misogynist-race-baiting-bullying-con-man be President of the country I love?”  Nancy was expressing the outrage felt by many, especially in the creative community. But, instead of moaning and groaning, Nancy Kells believes in action. So, she enlisted the help and partnership of Fox Food Records’ James Smith and together they curated a magnificent compilation album, coverFriends For Equality, featuring an amazing array of musical artists from across a wide spectrum of styles. With over forty previously unreleased tracks, all the proceeds will go to aid, Southern Poverty Law Center, Planned Parenthood, and ACLU. This is not just a labor of love, it’s serious endeavor to employ creative abilities to benefit organizations Nancy James believe could be threatened by the new administration. In the next edition of Life Elsewhere, Nancy Kells and contributing musician Erik Schroeder talk with Norman B about their passion for music, creativity and why they felt compelled to do something with a purpose, prompted by the Election result.

Trumpery: [TRUHM-puh-ree] Something of apparent value, but of little actual worth. From Middle French tromper, “to deceive”

“Charles Dickens would have had a fine time with Mr. Trump.” Says Bryan Kozlowski, adding, “He liked larger than life people, Mr. Trump could easily be a character out of a Dickens’ novel!” Kozlowski, is a self-admitted bookworm, a Dickens devotee, and a member of the Dickens Fellowship. He has written many articles on the life and legacy of Charles Dickens, his latest book, What The Dickens?! Distinctly Dickensian Words And How To Use Them is a literary romp through the twisty alleyways of Victorian vernacular. Bryan skillfully follows the etymological trails of 200 words penned by Dickens. He digs deep into the canons of Dickens, finding unusual words and phrases and explains their origins, use and offers pithy commentary on words like Tintinnabulation, Gormed, Humbug, Swipey, Cag-maggers, Spanker and of course Trumpery. Don’t miss the next edition of Life Elsewhere when Bryan Kozlowski joins Norman B to discuss What The Dickens?!

Good Good Music

Discovering new music has been a passion, if not an obsession for Norman B since, well since as far back as he can remember. The last couple of years or so have delivered a fabulous array of exciting new music, including Hugh, Zuzu, Sorcha Richardson, Barzin, Siv Jakobsen and recently, Spartan Jet-Plex along with Good Good Blood. The latter two acts are on the very wonderful Fox Food Records out of the UK. Now this is where things can get a little complicated, Spartan Jet-Plex is one of the many curious aliases Nancy Kells uses. Ms. Kells in any of her non-de-plumes makes excellent music which she releases through the above mentioned Fox Food Records, which happens to be the brainchild of one James Smith. And James has a band called Good Good Blood who have a new EP, Motion Sickness. And this is a collaboration between James Smith, Nancy Kells of Spartan Jet-Plex and Catherine DeGennaro  and Suzy Jivotovski of GRNDMS, (another Fox Food signing). We hope you are following along with this? These talented musicians have produced a superb set of songs on Motion Sickness by sending their tracks to and fro over the cloud. Hear the results on the next edition of Life Elsewhere. Plus a revealing interview with legendary music writer, Gene Sculatti author of Tryin’ to Tell a Stranger ‘Bout Rock and Roll: Selected Writings 1966-2016.

Samana is another new music discovery you’ll hear in an upcoming edition of Life Elsewhere. Frankie and Rebecca of Samana talk with Norman B about their nomadic life traveling around Europe, being in touch with nature, creating their beautiful, ethereal, haunting music and settling in an ancient stone cottage in the remote Brecon Beacons area of South Wales. Plus, revered author, Nicholson Baker, always a favorite guest on the program, will talk about his new book, Substitute – Going To School With A Thousand Kids. It’s a meticulously detailed account of his 28 days working as a K-12 substitute teacher in a Maine public school district. All this and more, in upcoming editions of Life Elsewhere.

New Discoveries!

Bob Proehl’s career history is not easy to identify because he writes with apparent expertise on relationships, comic book conventions, monsters, time travelers, and  even robots in his debut novel A Hundred Thousand Worlds. It turns out the native of Buffalo, New York, worked as a bookseller, a DJ, a record store owner, and a bartender. Occupations he clearly recalled for his witty, charming book about a mother and son as they travel from New York to Los Angeles, attending comic book conventions along the way. A Hundred Thousand Worlds. is a story about fandom and creativity, but it’s also about the complicated love between a mother and son, and how the stories we tell each other come to shape us, even as we shape them. Bob Proehl, an engaging guest, talks with Norman B about his book on the next edition of Life Elsewhere.

Discovering new music has been a passion of Norman B’s since the days of “steam-powered radio” he quips. Recently, among his new finds were Spartan Jet-Plex and Good Good Blood both on Fox Food Records, an enterprising label out of Yorkshire, UK. On further investigation, he found the label puts out hand-duplicated releases on cassettes and has a noteworthy catalog. Determined to know more, we tracked down label kingpin, the reserved, yet enthusiastic music-lover, James Smith and invited him onto the program. In a broad Yorkshire accent, James shares his story of creating a label to release music he loves, next on Life Elsewhere.

As a special preview, we are delighted to share with you two wonderful tracks from Fox Food Records:
