What Would You Tell The Undecided?

When the next edition of Life Elsewhere first airs, we will be just two days away from the Presidential election. As unlikely as it may seem, there are still people who claim to have not made up their minds when it comes to casting their vote.  At this late stage, what would you tell someone who is still undecided? To find out if there is an answer to the question, we called upon some of our favorite contributors* to Life Elsewhere. And, to get a “fair and balanced” response, we went out of the studio, into the real world and posed the question to a random selection of people. The responses, although unrehearsed and unscripted are thoughtful and surprising. Make sure you do not miss the next edition of Life Elsewhere to hear if you agree with our guests’ answers to, “What would you tell the undecided?”

*Our favorite contributors: Dr. Jennifer, Mercieca, professor of communications; Dr. Binoy Kampmark, senior lecturer & researcher in Global Studies; Terry Morgan, entertainment entrepreneur; Sean Dunne, filmmaker; Steve Brodner, caricaturist; Mark Haskell Smith, author; Nancy Kells, musician; Gillian Gaar, author; Bob Ross, film & media critic; Wreckless Eric, musician Stephen O’Connor, author.

A Female Demagogue?

Dr. Jennifer Mercieca

In the last edition of Life Elsewhere we talked about the then-upcoming first Presidential debate with our guests, comedian, and writer, Dave Hill and Dr. Jennifer Mercieca, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Texas A & M University. A week has passed and the debate has come and gone, but the fallout from it may continue well past the election on November 8. With record-breaking viewers, the match-up between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Trump was seen by many as more of a World Wrestling spectacle than a political debate. Mr. Trump, the controversial GOP candidate validated Dr. Mercieca’s premise that, “A rich billionaire, a fractured media, a polarized electorate, and a weak party system result in conditions ripe for demagoguery.” Since the debate, Mr. Trump has doubled-down on his well-documented sexist behavior, media chatter has continued at a feverish rate and a number of major newspapers have broken tradition by not endorsing a Republican. We too at Life Elsewhere have spent the last few days slicing and dicing the respective debate performances and the festering aftermath. Then, Norman B came up with this question, “Could we consider a woman a demagogue?” To find out, we invited back to Life ElsewhereDr. Jennifer Mercieca, Make sure you don’t miss our next edition, you may be surprised to learn what Dr. Jennifer, has to say about the possibility of a Female Demagogue…and the debate. Понимание того, как россияне понимают Америку*

trumputin

“Russia Hacks DNC”, The New Red Scare”, “Trump’s Pal Vlad”. Russia keeps showing up in the headlines as we hurtle toward the most bizarre Presidential election ever. Mr. Trump, the GOP Presidential nominee, constantly refers to Russia and Mr. Putin with approval in his atypical stump speeches. And, email hacks of the DNC and former United States Secretary of State, Colin Powell may have been conducted by a group with ties to the Russian government. So, what do Russian people make of all this headline attention? What do Russians think of Mr. Trump and his flattery of their country and leader? Do Russians believe their government is behind the email hacks? With their own State Duma election happening on September 18, how do Russians view the American election process? To help us understand how Russians understand what’s happening now in America, we invited Sergey Armeyskov back to Life Elsewhere. Mr. Armeyskov is the author of Russian Universe, a blog with the sub-title, Understanding Russia With A Russian. Sergey is fluent in English and he grasps the nuances and humor of life in America, including politics, Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton. His opinions may surprise you. But Sergey cautions, although his views are personal, they’re not too far from how most Russian people feel. Make sure you don’t miss the next edition of Life Elsewhere to understand how Russians understand America.

Polls: The Most Inexact Of Sciences

LE 172 Poll graphic

“Caught between a cynical Clinton machine and a shape-changing reality television show, US politics has featured its latest twist in the saga of surges and poll ratings. Now, we are being told that Donald Trump does have a chance against Hillary Clinton, spluttering ahead in some of the figures.” The words of Dr. Binoy Kampmark in a cogent piece he wrote for CounterPunch, titled Trump and the Polls of Loathing. The Melbourne-based lecturer joins the next edition of Life Elsewhere to talk about polls, what they mean and can they mislead as the race for the Whitehouse looms ahead. Binoy, a returning guest to the program, offers thoughtful analysis of the current state of American politics and the Presidential hopefuls. His subtle wit and clever diagnosis makes for informative and entertaining listening.

Dr. Binoy Kampmark is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies, at RMIT University, Melbourne

American Character & The Presidential Race

IMG_0099

It really is difficult to escape the fact that we are living in very strange times, the Presidential race becomes more bizarre as every moment passes. In the next edition of Life Elsewhere we explore different perspectives of the current and historical American political landscape and how it relates to who is running for the job of President. Award-winning author Colin Woodard will join the show to talk about his new book, American Character: A History of the Epic Struggle Between Individual Liberty and the Common GoodThe timing for the release of Colin’s book could not be more appropriate, his pertinent observations coincide with the national debate over how the United States should be governed.

Toby Miller is a social scientist, concentrating on cultural and media studies. Currently in Western Australia, Toby returns to Life Elsewhere to share his well-considered thoughts on Mr. Trump, Ms. Clinton and Mr. Sandars, the Presidential race and how the rest of the world views what may well be a historical outcome. Toby Miller will also bravely predict the outcome of the general election.

Plus, Norman B selects one of the many new music releases to come his way. “I cannot stop from raving on about the quality of the latest music I have discovered!” He says. London-based, Charlie Cunningham is a fine example. Known for the rhythmic Spanish guitar style he honed while studying in Seville, Cunningham offers up an excellent new EP titled, Heights. Take a listen to Charlie’s song, Blindfold and let us know what you think. Send your feedback to comment@lifeelsewhere.co
