USA v Portugal The Most-Viewed Soccer Match Ever In The US

Screen Shot 2014-06-23 at 6.41.24 PMAccording to the Neilsen company, whose business is to keep tabs on these things, more than 24.7 million viewers watched USA’s thrilling draw with Portugal on ESPN and Univision. The gripping World Cup game was seen by an average of 24.7 million viewers last Sunday evening and an additional 490,000 people streamed coverage of the game on their mobile devices. “At last, this could mean that America takes football, er, soccer seriously!” Said Michael Dennis of FanChants, reporting on the World Cup, live from Brazil for Life Elsewhere. Michael shared with us the rambunctious atmosphere and told stories of celebrating with the locales until way past 6am. The co-founder of the website dedicated to exploring and recording amazing Fan Chants from around the world, shared with us these three new Fan Chants in praise of team USA.

Also on the program, a self-admitted non-soccer fan, Sebastian Anthony, talking to us from the Sussex countryside in England, explained his article titled, “Who in their right mind would buy Amazon’s Fire Phone?”Sebastian who writes for Extreme Tech describes himself as “A tall, hairy, British writer who blogs about technology, photography, travel, and whatever else catches my eye”. The one thing he didn’t mention in his witty bio, was his disinterest in soccer. Norman B inadvertently presumed Mr. Anthony had to be passionately following the sport. When asked what he thought of the World Cup matches so far, Sebastian candidly answered, “I don’t like soccer that much”. A true unrehearsed radio moment.
