From Fiction To Reality – A Conversation With The Prongs

“Post-punk lit-rockers” Announced The Prongs with the publicity blurb for their single, Hey! Dandy. Unfamiliar with, but curious by the descriptive moniker “lit-rockers” we had to learn more. Dubliners John Fleming and Niall Toner Jr. have been friends since their teenage years. Fleming is an award-winning radio dramatist who has written half a dozen radio plays broadcast by RTE and BBC, along with other forms  of fiction including the critically acclaimed novel The Now Now Express. Toner Jr is a renowned musician,  songwriter and soundscape designer who has played and toured in bands since the 1980s such as Those  Handsome Devils, The Dixons, The Cajun Kings and Strand. The Prongs is a kaleidoscopic meeting of the two men’s talents, hearts and minds with Toner Jr writing and producing the music and Fleming writing and vocalizing the lyrics. Inspired by Fleming’s cult novel the long-time Dublin friends decided to drag the fictional band from its pages into reality. As you’ll hear in our conversation and their astute music, John and Niall take the roles seriously, albeit with a generous helping of sardonic observations. They’re rather proud of any hint of retro influences or fan-based references. The whole-hearted passion of these two men for their project – The Prongs is undeniable.
