Listen! Chorale Music (& Nick Drake)

Next on Life Elsewhere, we explore chorale music (or is it choral?) with GRAMMY-nominated singer and conductor Dr. James Bass. The director of choral studies at the School of Music at the University of South Florida and the artistic director of The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay joins the program at the request of Kerry Travilla-Bown who will be guest producer. Kerry, an enthusiastic devotee of Life Elsewhere, made a generous donation to WMNF, the listener-supported radio station, where Life Elsewhere is produced. During the station’s last fund-raising event, listeners were asked to make an appreciable contribution, in return they would be able to co-produce an edition of the program. Kerry  came up with the funds and a brilliant programming idea, “I’m a member of The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay Kerry announced, “How about introducing the listeners to chorale music?”

Nick DrakeAs she is guest programmer, we asked Kerry Travilla-Bown to come up with this week’s Hit That Never Was. She astutely chose the talented and influential but sadly long-departed Nick Drake and his poignant, River ManKerry explains that Drake is believed to have been keen on echoing the evocative music of Delius and Ravel. Coincidentally, The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay and The Florida Orchestra released: Delius: Appalachia; Sea Drift in 2012.
